The Question of Base Budget Adequacy
In accord with the General Assembly, and as a matter of public record, the
operating budget of Virginia’s community colleges falls short by about 129 million
dollars.
What does that look like? In Northern Virginia we’ve got brand new, multi-million
dollar, empty labs: zero teachers equal zero students. A single mom had to sit out of
her nursing program while about ten jobs are waiting for her and for every nursing
graduate. This is costly for her, for hospitals, and for our quality of life.
It gets worse.
- By 2009, Virginia will need nearly 450,000 new skilled workers.
- By 2009, another 16,000 new students will seek access to a
Virginia community college.
