CVCC Receives Nuclear Regulatory Commission Grant
Lynchburg, VA /Media
Release/ 08/13/09-- Central Virginia Community College has received a $149,830
grant from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The grant will provide
scholarships and support for the Colleges Nuclear Radiation Technologies degree
programs. These programs are part of Region 2000s Grow Your Own initiative,
the regions highly successful effort to train local talent for local jobs, and
are partnership efforts with AREVA NP, Babcock and Wilcox, and Dominion Power.
The Grow Your Own pipeline introduces middle and high students to future
technical careers, beginning with CVCC-led Summer Academies and the states
largest Lego robotics competition. High school students may continue this
technical educational through dual enrollment, early college, and a very
selective summer apprenticeship program. College-bound students may then
complete a two-year technical education through CVCCs sponsored degree programs
or, if qualified, pursue a four-year degree through the highly competitive CVCC/UVa
Engineering program. Individuals who continue on to graduate studies can
benefit from the Center for Advanced Engineering and Research (CAER)
Lynchburg-based graduate engineering programs through the Commonwealth Graduate
Engineering Program (CGEP).
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission funding will support tuition and pay for
individuals selected by local, partnering companies. Students accepting the
financial support must agree to serve six months in a nuclear-related field for
each year of support gained through Nuclear Regulatory Commission funding.
