Photographic Artist Sammy Allen to Exhibit “Self-Portraits: Then and Now”

Lynchburg, VA /Media Release/08/25/09--Sammy Allen, an award-winning Lynchburg artist known for her hand-colored photographs, as well as her gelatin silver and digital work,  will exhibit self-portraits during the months of September and October, in the Merritt Hall Gallery at Central Virginia Community College. The exhibition entitled “Self-Portraits: Then and Now” features work from a 28-year time span in the artist’s life. The work will hang from September 1 until October 31, with an opening reception to be held on Friday, September 11, from 5:30 until 8:00 p.m.

Allen originally studied photography at CVCC. She has an associate’s degree in advertising and photography from the College and has been in many local and regional shows. She has been accepted in the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center and Academy of Fine Arts juried photography shows for many years, winning a number of awards including Best of Show in 1982. Her work has been selected 26 times for the judge’s fence at the Lynchburg Art Club Show, and she has won awards, including a 2007 Blue Ribbon and the 2003 Campbell Insurance award. In 1986, she won First Place in Photography in the Waynesboro Fall Art Show.

Her work has been included in local and national publications, including Photographic Magazine. She has work in the permanent collections of Lynchburg College, Longwood College, and Central Virginia Community College.

The artist explains that her work, whether personal or commissioned, “is influenced by romance and simplicity as well as traditional illusion of form and space . . . In my opinion, a meaningful image must invoke emotion.” When doing work for clients, she says, “I love to challenge myself to create something totally new and different for my clients. I might take the session to an environment I’ve never used before, or use light and color in new ways, or find new elements for a background that works well for one particular subject. When I’m inspired to work outside the box, that‘s when the emotion flows.”

The  reception at Merritt Hall on Friday, September 11, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. is free and open to the public. For further information contact CVCC curator Kathy Cudlin at kcudlin@aol.com .
