Jewel Newman Named Assistant Professor at CVCC

Lynchburg, VA /Media Release/8/27/09 –Jewel Newman, former machine and welding Instructor I trainer in the Science, Math, and Engineering Division at Central Virginia Community College, has been named Assistant Professor of Welding. She holds a Machine Tool diploma and A.A.&S. degree from CVCC, a B.S. from Old Dominion University, and an M.B.A. from Liberty University.

Originally from Amherst County, Newman studied business in high school and began her career as a metal pattern maker at Lynchburg Foundry. While at the foundry, she studied machine tool, welding, and drafting at CVCC. In 2006, she earned her bachelor’s degree in occupational technical education from Old Dominion University through their distance education program on the CVCC campus. In 2008, she completed her M.B.A. at L.U. with a focus on leadership.

In addition to twenty years of experience at CVCC as a support person and teacher, Newman brings a knowledge of computer programming to her new position, as well as experience in financing and an understanding of the relationship of the College to business and industry.

Newman explains that there are jobs for welders in the area and some very good opportunities for graduates willing to relocate. She recently received a call for 200 welders for the Newport News area. Seventy-five students are currently enrolled in the CVCC welding classes, and local businesses Banker Steel, O’Neal Steel, and Lynchburg Steel partner with the College by donating metals to the program.

In reviewing the history of the program, Newman says, “We currently have a lot of wonderful new equipment, but I still have dreams for the future, too. In the years to come, we will have programmable robots for automatic welding along with a lot of other exciting innovations.”

Newman calls herself a “true Amherst County native,” and enjoys working with the local Humane Society and participating in her church, Elon Presbyterian. Newman’s husband Mark also teaches in the Science, Math, and Engineering Division at CVCC.
