What You Should Know about Taking the Compass

  1. The Compass test is computerized, un-timed and self-paced.
  2. Take your time to read the directions carefully.
  3. Once you have hit the “go on” button, you cannot go back and review your answers.
  4. Most students can complete the entire test in 2 to 2 1/2 hours.
  5. If you begin testing later in the day and cannot complete your test prior to closing, you may be required to return during another session to complete your test.

There are three sub-tests

  • Writing:
    • This test evaluates your editing skills. Can you review a passage written by someone else and figure out what is right and what is wrong. It is very important to take your time and review the entire passage in detail before you move on. Once you move on, you can’t go back.
    • There will be no hints or cues to advise you of possible errors.
    • Errors may cover grammar, sentence structure, spelling, word usage, and punctuation.
  • Reading:
    • This part of the Compass evaluates your ability to understand and answer questions about what you have read.
  • Mathematics:
    • You may use one of our calculators or your own providing it meets the guidelines for calculator use established by ACT.
