Apply for Veterans Benefits

Getting started:

  1. Complete and submit CVCC Application for Admission. You may apply on-line at www.cvcc.vccs.edu/Student%20Services/Admissions%20and%20Records/Apply.asp.
  2. Take appropriate assessment/placement tests and provide a copy of the scores to your VA Coordinator.
  3. Meet with a counselor to discuss your academic interest and select a program. You must choose a degree plan or certificate plan to apply for DVA benefits.
  4. Enroll for classes on-line (http://www.cvcc.vccs.edu/Student Services/Advising/Enrolling.asp) or at the Office of Admissions and Records.
  5. Make payment before the due date; otherwise you will be dropped for nonpayment.
  6. Complete Notification of Veterans Student Status form for enrollment certification (www.cvcc.vccs.edu/Student%20Services/Veterans/VetStatusForm.asp). Certification is based on the number of credits; DVA will only pay for classes listed in your curriculum; DVA will not pay for previously completed classes; and DVA will not pay for orientation.
  7. Submit official transcripts for evaluation to the Office of Admissions and Records, including your DD-214, DD-2384 and transcripts from prior colleges and military service schools (Community College of the Air Force; AARTS/Army/ACE Registry Transcript System; SMART/Sailor/Marine Registry Transcript). The DVA requires an evaluation of your military training/experience and all prior college credits. All transcripts must be submitted and evaluated by the end of your second semester; otherwise DVA will stop your benefits.

  8. Community College of the Air Force (http://www.au.af.mil/au/ccaf/)

To activate your DVA benefits, please follow these steps:

  1. For Chapter 30, 32, 1606 and 1607 benefits, submit an Application for VA Education Benefits (VA form 22-1990). You may also submit an application on-line Veteran Affairs On-Line Application. Please note, mail a copy of your DD-214 form and any documents regarding your college fund to the address listed on the VA website.

Note: If you have previously used your education benefits, please submit a Request for Change of Program or Place of Training (VA form 22-1995) on-line at Veteran Affairs On-Line Application.
  2. For Chapter 35 benefits, submit an Application for Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance Program (VA form 22-5490) on-line at Veteran Affairs On-Line Application.

Note: If you have previously used your education benefits, please submit a Request for Change of Program or Place of Training, Survivors’ and Dependents’ Education Assistance Program (VA form 22-5495) on-line at Veteran Affairs On-Line Application.

Note: If you are eligible for Chapter 35 benefits, please inquire about the Virginia Department of Veterans Services (Military Survivors and Dependents Education Program).
  3. To receive payment you must verify your enrollment monthly either by touch tone (877-823-2378) or on-line Web Automated Verification of Enrollment (WAVE). Remember to repeat this process on the last day of each month for which you are entitled to benefits, otherwise you will not get paid.

To continue your education benefits without interruption:

  1. Submit a Notification of Veterans Student Status form each semester to your Veterans Coordinator www.cvcc.vccs.edu/Student Services/Veterans/VetStatusForm.asp.
  2. Promptly notify your Veterans Coordinator of any enrollment changes to avoid overpayment or underpayment of benefits; also report any changes on your monthly certification to DVA.
  3. Have all prior college credits and military experience evaluated by the end of your second semester.

All forms are available at the office of the Veterans Coordinator.
